Your Google Business Profile name is the single most abused field in local search. It is also the one Google enforces most unevenly. Add “Best Plumber Toronto 24/7” to your name and you might jump three spots in the map pack for a month, then wake up to a suspended profile. Leave it alone while a competitor stuffs theirs, and you watch them outrank you.
Here are the Google Business Profile name rules as they actually work for service businesses in the GTA, what you can safely add, and what to do about competitors who break them.
What Google’s Business Profile name rules say
Google’s guideline is simple: your name should match your real-world business name, the one on your signage, website, invoices and letterhead. That is the test. If a customer would not see that exact name on your truck or storefront, it should not be in the profile.
Google specifically prohibits these in the name field:
- Keywords or service descriptions that are not part of your legal or branded name (“Smith Plumbing Drain Cleaning Water Heaters”)
- Location modifiers that are not part of the name (“Smith Plumbing Mississauga”)
- Phone numbers, URLs, addresses or hours
- Marketing taglines, promotions or prices (“Free Estimates”, “Cheapest in GTA”)
- Excessive capitalization, symbols or emoji
- Your own name added to a business that is not named after you, such as a lawyer or realtor’s personal name in a company listing
What is allowed in your business name
The rules are stricter than most owners assume, but there is room to work with. A descriptor is fine when it is a genuine part of how you present yourself everywhere.
| Name on profile | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Smith & Sons Plumbing | Allowed | Matches signage and invoices; “Plumbing” is part of the brand |
| Smith Plumbing Toronto | Risky | City is not on the sign or legal name |
| Smith Plumbing | 24/7 Emergency Drain Cleaning | Not allowed | Tagline and service list |
| Smith Plumbing Ltd. | Allowed | Legal suffix matches registration |
| Smith Plumbing (416) 555-0123 | Not allowed | Phone number in name field |
If your registered name is only “Smith & Sons” but every sign, van wrap and website header says “Smith & Sons Plumbing”, use the longer one. Consistency across your real-world presence is what Google checks against.
Why keyword-stuffing your name works, until it does not
Name is a ranking signal. Google has said business name relevance matters, and stuffed names do outrank clean ones in many categories. That is why so many contractors and clinics do it.
The risk is asymmetric. Google can flag edits for review, and a name change can trigger re-verification or a suspension, which takes your profile out of the map pack entirely. A suspended profile earns zero calls, so a gain in rank is not worth it. If this has already happened, our guide on fixing a suspended Google Business Profile walks through the reinstatement process.
How to rank without touching your name
The name is one factor. These matter just as much and carry no suspension risk. For the full picture, see our breakdown of Google 3-pack ranking factors.
- Primary category: pick the most specific one that fits. This is the strongest lever you control.
- Services and descriptions: list every service you offer in the services section, where keywords are allowed.
- Reviews: real customers naming the service and neighbourhood in their reviews does what a stuffed name cannot.
- Website relevance: a dedicated page for each core service, linked from the profile.
- Proximity and prominence: citations, local links and consistent business details.
How to report a competitor who keyword-stuffs their name
Reporting works better when you are methodical. Follow this process:
- Search the competitor’s name in Google Maps and open the profile.
- Click “Suggest an edit” and change the name to the real one, based on their website or signage.
- Explain briefly in the note: “Name includes keywords and city not on business signage. Real name per website is X.”
- Attach a screenshot of their website header or Street View of their sign if you can.
- If nothing changes in two to three weeks, submit the Business Profile Redressal Complaint form with the same evidence.
Expect it to take time, and expect some edits to be rejected. Some stuffed names stay up for months. Keep working on the factors you control rather than waiting on Google.
What to do if you already stuffed your name
Fix it before Google does. Change the name back to your real business name, make sure your website and other listings match, and check you do not have a duplicate Google Business Profile listing created along the way. A voluntary correction is far safer than a forced one.
Google Business Profile name rules: FAQ
Can I add my city to my Google Business Profile name?
Only if the city is part of your actual business name and appears on your signage and legal documents. Adding “Toronto” or “Brampton” to a name that does not include it breaks the guidelines.
Can I add a service keyword like “plumber” to my business name?
Only if it is already part of how your business is branded everywhere, for example “Smith Plumbing”. Adding extra service terms that are not on your signage is keyword stuffing.
Will changing my Google Business Profile name hurt my rankings?
A change to match your real name can cause a temporary review or re-verification. If the new name is accurate, rankings normally hold, but expect some movement for a few weeks.
How long does it take Google to remove a competitor’s stuffed name?
Edit suggestions are sometimes approved within days and sometimes ignored. Escalating through the redressal form with evidence usually takes a few weeks, and results vary.
