Squarespace SEO Services

Squarespace looks beautiful. Now let’s make it rank.

Squarespace builds some of the most visually impressive sites on the web — but great design doesn’t equal great rankings. The platform has real SEO constraints that most site owners don’t know about, and most agencies don’t know how to work around. We do.

The Honest Truth About Squarespace SEO

Beautiful design
and strong rankings
are not the same thing.

Squarespace attracts designers, photographers, restaurateurs, and creative professionals because it produces stunning websites with almost no technical effort. What it doesn’t do is automatically make those sites rank. Squarespace gives you control over the basic SEO fields — page titles, descriptions, alt text — but it locks you out of deeper customization that matters: you can’t edit your robots.txt directly, custom schema markup requires code injection workarounds, URL structures are more rigid than WordPress, and page speed is limited by Squarespace’s own JavaScript framework. None of this means you can’t rank. It means you need to know exactly what’s possible and execute flawlessly within those constraints.

  • Squarespace supports meta titles, descriptions, alt text, and canonical tags natively
  • Schema markup requires code injection — limited but workable for most use cases
  • Page speed is Squarespace’s biggest SEO weakness — the framework adds significant overhead
  • URL structures are more flexible in Squarespace 7.1 but still have constraints vs WordPress
  • Local SEO and off-page strategy work identically regardless of your CMS

Common Squarespace SEO Issues

The Squarespace SEO issues
we fix on every site

These are the Squarespace-specific ranking suppressors we find on nearly every site we audit — and exactly what we address.

Very Common
🐢

Page Speed & Core Web Vitals

Squarespace’s proprietary JavaScript framework adds significant load overhead that you can’t remove. We optimize everything within Squarespace’s control — image compression, lazy loading, removing unused blocks, disabling animations — and implement external CDN solutions where possible to push scores as high as the platform allows.

Very Common
📝

Unoptimized Page Titles Across the Site

Squarespace uses your page name as the title tag by default, appended with your site name — resulting in titles like “About — Studio Name” that are completely unoptimized for search. Every page needs a deliberate, keyword-targeted title that reflects what the page is about and what people are actually searching for.

Very Common
🖼️

Large Uncompressed Images

Squarespace’s drag-and-drop editor makes it trivially easy to upload full-resolution images directly from camera rolls or design files. A single page with three unoptimized photos can add 4-8 seconds of load time. We audit every image, establish size standards, and implement Squarespace’s built-in image optimization settings that most users never configure.

Common
🔧

Missing Structured Data

Squarespace doesn’t add LocalBusiness, Service, or FAQ schema automatically. For businesses that depend on local search or featured snippets, this is a meaningful ranking disadvantage. We implement structured data via Squarespace’s code injection panel — a supported workaround that gets the job done without requiring a platform migration.

Common
📄

Thin Service and About Pages

Squarespace’s visual templates encourage beautiful, minimal layouts — which often means pages with very little actual text content. Google needs substantive, keyword-rich content to rank a page confidently. We rewrite and expand thin pages with SEO-optimized copy that works for both search engines and the humans reading it.

Often Missed
🔗

No Internal Linking Strategy

Most Squarespace sites are built page by page with no deliberate internal linking plan — which means important pages receive no link equity from the rest of the site. We map and implement a full internal linking structure that signals to Google which pages are most important and compounds rankings across the entire site over time.

Speed & Core Web Vitals Optimization

We optimize everything Squarespace allows — image compression, lazy loading configuration, block and animation reduction, font loading optimization, and third-party script management. We’re honest about the ceiling: you won’t hit 100 on PageSpeed Insights on Squarespace, but significant improvement from your current baseline is achievable and meaningful for rankings.

📍

Local SEO & Google Business Profile

Local SEO is the most platform-agnostic area of SEO — your Google Business Profile, local citations, NAP consistency, and review strategy all operate completely outside Squarespace. For local businesses, this is often the highest-leverage work available and where we see the fastest results regardless of which CMS your site is built on.

SEO Content Strategy

New and expanded pages targeting the keywords your customers are searching — service pages, location pages, blog content, and FAQ sections. Content is the one area where Squarespace has zero limitations. We write SEO-optimized copy that’s substantive enough to rank and compelling enough to convert the people who find it.

Link Building & Off-Page Authority

Backlinks work identically across every CMS. A strong backlink profile built from relevant directories, local citations, and editorial sources compounds your domain authority and ranking ability over time — and it doesn’t matter whether your site is on Squarespace, WordPress, or a custom-built stack. This is where long-term ranking stability comes from.

Talk to us directly
Is Squarespace bad for SEO?+
No — this is an outdated take that circulates because WordPress agencies have an incentive to push platform migrations. Squarespace has improved significantly and gives you control over all the on-page fundamentals that matter: meta titles, descriptions, canonical tags, alt text, 301 redirects, and sitemaps. Its real limitations are page speed, schema markup (requires code injection), and URL structure flexibility. For most small and medium businesses those limitations don’t prevent ranking — they just require a smarter strategy within the platform’s constraints.
Should I migrate from Squarespace to WordPress for SEO?+
For most businesses — no. A CMS migration is expensive, time-consuming, and carries real risk of ranking drops during the transition. The performance ceiling on Squarespace is lower than on a perfectly optimized WordPress install, but for local businesses, service providers, restaurants, photographers, and small e-commerce sites, the practical difference in ranking outcomes is minimal if your content, backlinks, and on-page fundamentals are properly executed. We recommend migrating only when you have a specific technical requirement — like very large-scale eCommerce or complex custom functionality — that Squarespace genuinely can’t support.
What’s the biggest SEO disadvantage of Squarespace?+
Page speed, without question. Squarespace loads its own JavaScript framework on every page — code you can’t remove or meaningfully edit — which adds significant overhead to your Core Web Vitals scores. LCP and INP are ranking factors. You can reduce the damage by compressing images aggressively, removing unused blocks and animations, and minimizing third-party scripts, but you can’t achieve the same performance ceiling as a properly optimized WordPress or custom-coded site. For local SEO the impact is moderate. For competitive national SEO on high-traffic keywords it can be a more significant factor.
Can I add schema markup to a Squarespace site?+
Yes — via Squarespace’s code injection feature, available on Business plans and above. You can inject JSON-LD structured data into the header of individual pages or site-wide. This allows you to add LocalBusiness, Service, FAQ, BreadcrumbList, and other schema types that Squarespace doesn’t generate automatically. It’s a workaround rather than a native feature, but it works correctly and Google reads it without issue. We implement this as part of every Squarespace SEO engagement for clients on an eligible plan.
Does Squarespace 7.1 have better SEO than 7.0?+
Yes, meaningfully so. Squarespace 7.1 introduced a cleaner URL structure with more flexibility, improved page speed compared to 7.0 template architecture, better mobile performance, and a more streamlined codebase. If you’re still on a 7.0 template, upgrading to 7.1 is generally worth it from an SEO perspective — though it requires rebuilding your site’s design in the new editor since 7.0 templates aren’t directly compatible. We assess your current version as part of every audit and provide an honest recommendation on whether upgrading is worthwhile for your specific situation.
What does the free Squarespace SEO audit include?+
