The Honest Truth About Wix SEO

Wix can rank.
But not on
its own.

Wix has come a long way since the days when SEO experts universally recommended avoiding it. Today, Wix gives you control over meta titles, descriptions, canonical tags, structured data, XML sitemaps, and robots.txt. For most small businesses, that’s genuinely enough to rank — if you know how to use it properly and pair it with strong off-page strategy. The problem is that most Wix sites are set up by people who built the site themselves, filled in the basic SEO fields, and called it done. That’s not an SEO strategy. That’s a starting point.

  • Wix now supports full meta tag control, canonical URLs, and structured data
  • Wix sites routinely rank on page one — the platform is not the limiting factor
  • Page speed on Wix is limited — you can’t edit code directly, but optimization is still possible
  • URL structure on Wix has quirks — subfolders are limited and slugs need deliberate management
  • Off-page SEO — backlinks, GBP, citations — matters just as much for Wix as any other platform

Common Wix SEO Issues

The Wix SEO mistakes
we fix on every site

Most Wix sites that aren’t ranking have the same fixable problems. These are the issues we find in almost every Wix SEO audit — and exactly what we fix.

Very Common
📝

Default Page Titles and Meta Descriptions

Wix auto-populates meta titles using your page name and site name. Almost every Wix site we audit has pages titled “About | My Business” or “Services | Home” — completely unoptimized for search. Every page needs a deliberate, keyword-targeted title and description written from scratch.

Very Common
🖼️

Missing Alt Text on All Images

Wix doesn’t prompt you to add alt text when uploading images, so most Wix sites have hundreds of images with no alt attributes. This hurts both image search rankings and accessibility scores — and Google uses image alt text as a content relevance signal for the surrounding page.

Very Common
🔗

Poor URL Slugs

Wix generates URLs from your page titles by default — which often produces slugs like “/about-1” or “/services-copy” from duplicated pages. Meanwhile, important pages end up with generic slugs like “/services” instead of keyword-rich URLs like “/renovation-contractor-toronto”. Every slug needs deliberate review.

Common
🗺️

Hidden Pages in Sitemap

Wix includes all pages in your sitemap by default — including hidden pages, thank-you pages, and pages under construction. This wastes crawl budget and can dilute your site’s authority. The sitemap needs to be audited and stripped down to only the pages you want Google indexing.

Common
📄

Thin or Duplicate Page Content

Wix makes it easy to duplicate pages — which often results in near-identical service or location pages that cannibalize each other’s rankings. Thin content pages with under 300 words of original text also suppresses your ability to rank. Every page needs sufficient, differentiated, keyword-optimized content.

Often Missed
🔧

No Structured Data for Key Page Types

Wix’s built-in schema is limited to basic types. Local businesses, service pages, and blog posts all benefit from richer structured data — LocalBusiness, Service, Article, FAQ — that Wix doesn’t add automatically. We implement these via Wix’s custom HTML embed where native support is unavailable.

FAQ

Wix SEO questions, answered honestly.

The questions Wix site owners ask most — answered directly, without the platform bias you get from most SEO agencies who prefer WordPress.

Talk to us directly
Can a Wix site actually rank on Google?+
Yes — Wix sites rank on Google every day, including for competitive keywords. The idea that Wix can’t rank is outdated. Wix has significantly improved its SEO infrastructure since 2020, and for most small and medium businesses the platform is not the limiting factor. The limiting factors are usually the same as on any platform: thin content, no backlinks, misconfigured meta tags, weak Google Business Profile, and no deliberate keyword strategy. Fix those and a Wix site can rank.
Should I switch from Wix to WordPress for better SEO?+
For most small businesses — no. The SEO ceiling on Wix is lower than WordPress for very technical or large-scale SEO work, but the practical ranking ceiling for a local service business, restaurant, or small e-commerce store is the same on both platforms if your content, backlinks, and on-page fundamentals are right. Migrating to WordPress costs time, money, and carries real migration risk including ranking drops. We recommend staying on Wix unless you have a specific technical requirement the platform genuinely can’t meet.
What’s the biggest SEO disadvantage of Wix?+
Page speed. Wix generates its own JavaScript and you can’t edit it directly, which means Core Web Vitals scores — particularly LCP and INP — are harder to optimize than on WordPress or a custom-coded site. You can improve scores by compressing images, removing unused apps, and disabling animations, but you can’t achieve the same technical performance ceiling as a well-optimized WordPress site. For content-heavy sites or competitive national SEO, this matters more. For local SEO, it’s rarely the deciding factor.
Does Wix’s SEO Wiz actually help?+
The Wix SEO Wiz is a useful starting point — it walks you through connecting Google Search Console, setting up your sitemap, adding basic meta tags, and verifying your site. It’s genuinely helpful for people who have never touched SEO before. But it covers only the surface-level basics. It doesn’t help you with keyword research, content depth, internal linking strategy, backlink building, Google Business Profile optimization, or structured data beyond the basics. Think of it as the setup wizard, not the strategy.
Can Wix handle local SEO for a small business?+
Yes — and local SEO is actually where the Wix platform disadvantage matters least. Local SEO is driven primarily by your Google Business Profile, local citations, customer reviews, and geo-targeted content — all of which are completely independent of your CMS. A Wix site with a well-optimized GBP, consistent NAP citations across directories, strong reviews, and proper local landing pages will outrank a WordPress site that neglects those factors, every single time.
What does the free Wix SEO audit include?+
Your free audit covers a full review of your Wix site’s meta tags, URL structure, sitemap configuration, image alt text, page content depth, internal linking, structured data, robots.txt settings, Google Business Profile, and Search Console health. You get a prioritized list of every issue suppressing your rankings — with honest notes on what’s fixable inside Wix and what requires off-platform strategy. No generic automated report — a real analysis of your actual site.
