A customer searches “plumber near me” on Boxing Day, sees your listing marked open, calls, and gets voicemail. That one call is gone, and so is the review they leave afterward. Google Business Profile holiday hours exist to prevent exactly that, and most local businesses in the GTA never set them.
This guide covers when to set them, how to do it, and the mistakes that cost service businesses calls every December.
Why Google Business Profile holiday hours matter
Your regular hours show on your profile all year. Google assumes you follow them on every holiday unless you say otherwise. Some listings get a generic “holiday hours might differ” notice, but that notice does nothing to tell a customer whether you will pick up.
For a service business, the damage is specific:
- Emergency searches spike when people are home and something breaks. Furnaces, burst pipes and lockouts do not wait for January.
- A listing marked open that goes unanswered trains customers to skip you next time.
- Wrong hours are one of the most common reasons for negative reviews that mention “nobody answered”.
- Accurate hours are also a basic local ranking and trust input. See our Google Business Profile insights guide for how to track calls from your listing.
Which dates to set in Ontario
Do not limit this to Christmas. Any day your hours differ from the normal schedule needs an entry. Here is a working list for Ontario service businesses:
| Date | Common action |
|---|---|
| Christmas Eve (Dec 24) | Close early or run reduced hours |
| Christmas Day (Dec 25) | Closed, or emergency line only |
| Boxing Day (Dec 26) | Closed or reduced hours |
| New Year’s Eve (Dec 31) | Close early |
| New Year’s Day (Jan 1) | Closed |
| Family Day (third Monday in February) | Closed or reduced |
| Good Friday | Closed |
| Victoria Day, Canada Day, Labour Day, Thanksgiving | Check against your normal schedule |
Decide your hours first, then enter them. Guessing and changing later creates a mess of conflicting information.
How to set special hours on your profile
- Sign in to the Google account that manages the profile and search for your business name, or open Business Profile Manager.
- Choose Edit profile, then open Business information and select Hours.
- Find Special hours and click Add special hours.
- Pick the date, then mark it closed or enter the open and close times.
- Save. Repeat for every date that differs from your normal schedule.
You can enter special hours weeks ahead. Set them in early November so they are live before the rush. Interface labels shift from time to time, so follow the on-screen wording if it differs slightly.
Mistakes that cost calls
Setting hours only on the profile
Your website, Facebook page and any directory listings also show hours. If they disagree with Google, customers trust whichever they saw last. Update them together. Consistent details across listings are part of any local SEO audit.
Closing the profile instead of the day
Marking the whole business as temporarily closed hurts visibility. Use special hours for individual days instead.
Forgetting the after-hours phone
If you offer emergency service, say so. Use a Google Business Profile post to announce holiday availability and the number to call. Our guide on Google Business Profile posts covers what to include.
Not turning them back
Special hours expire on their own after the date passes, so there is nothing to undo. Still, check on January 2 that regular hours are showing correctly.
A simple holiday hours checklist
- Decide closures and reduced hours by early November.
- Enter every date as special hours on Google.
- Update the website header, contact page and any directory listings.
- Change your voicemail greeting and call forwarding to match.
- Publish a profile post with holiday availability.
- Review calls and messages in your profile after the break.
Frequently asked questions
Can I set Google Business Profile holiday hours in advance?
Yes. You can add special hours for future dates, and they show on the correct day. Setting them one month ahead is a safe habit.
Does Google change my holiday hours automatically?
Google may show a notice that hours might differ on a holiday, but it does not know your schedule. Only the special hours you enter tell customers the real times.
What if I run an emergency service on holidays?
Enter the hours you actually answer the phone. If it is 24 hours, mark it that way, and make sure the number on your listing reaches a live person.
Do wrong hours affect local rankings?
Accuracy is part of the trust Google places in a listing, and wrong hours generate bad reviews and fewer calls. Even if rankings do not move, the lost leads are real.
